Extreme Value Analysis of Daily Canadian Crude Oil Prices

چکیده
Crude oil markets are highly volatile and risky. Extreme value theory (EVT), an approach to modelling and measuring risks under rare events, has seen a more prominent role in risk management in recent years. This paper presents an application of EVT to the daily returns of crude oil prices in the Canadian spot market between 1998 and 2006. We focus on the peak over threshold method by analyzing the generalized Paretodistributed exceedances over some high threshold. This method provides an effective means for estimating tail risk measures such as Value-at-Risk and Expected Shortfall. The estimates of risk measures computed under different high quantile levels exhibit strong stability across a range of the selected thresholds. At the 99 quantile, the estimates of VaR are approximately 6.3% and 6.8% for daily positive and negative returns, respectively.

Forecasting Crude Oil prices Volatility and Value at Risk: Single and Switching Regime GARCH Models
Forecasting crude oil price volatility is an important issues in risk management. The historical course of oil price volatility indicates the existence of a cluster pattern. Therefore, GARCH models are used to model and more accurately predict oil price fluctuations. The purpose of this study is to identify the best GARCH model with the best performance in different time horizons. To achieve th...

Hedging the risk of crude oil prices fluctuation for countries such as Iran that are highly dependent on oil export earnings is one of the important subject to discuss. In this regard, the main purpose of this study is to calculate and analyze the optimal dynamic hedging ratio for Iranian light and heavy crude oil spot prices based on one-month to four-month cross hedge contracts in New York St...
متن کاملInvestigation of the Relations between Crude Oil Prices and Real Effective Exchange Rate (REER) in Iran using Phase-Angle Analysis
Abstract: This paper discusses two topics. At first, it uses continuous wavelet (Morlet) transform, coherency, and phase angle analysis to study the effect of mean volatility in OPEC Crude Oil prices, WTI crude oil prices, Brent Crude oil prices and Iran’s crude oil prices on The Iran’s REER. To this end, the monthly data of the variables for years 2003 to 2012 is used. Coherency analysis rev...
متن کاملA Dynamic Analysis of Market Efficiency on Benchmark Crude oil markets: Based on the Adaptive Market Hypothesis
This paper examines the applicability of the adaptive market hypothesis (AMH) as an evolutionary alternative to the efficient market hypothesis (EMH) by studying daily returns on the three benchmark crude oils. The data coverage of daily returns is from January 2th 2003 to March 5th 2018. In this paper, two different tests in the form of two distinguished classes (linear and nonlinear) have bee...
متن کاملEffect of Ship Fuel Sulfur Reduction Law on Iranian Oil Price (IMO Law)
In recent decades, the increase of pollution from consumption of oil and petroleum products has led to development of many environmental laws. It is important for Iranian policy makers to be informed about the impact of such laws on oil prices, given the dependence of the country’s budget on oil revenues. Under a new International Maritime Organization regulation passed in mid-2016, ships are r...
